COMMUNITY NEWS: A 100 year old landmark, Gibson’s West Harbor Hotel, was severely damaged Nov. 4. The smoke alarm alerted the family at 4:37 A.M. A fire had already taken out the first and second floor windows and it was in the attic when the fire trucks arrived. Neighbor and Fire Chief, Peter Nehlsen, arrived within minutes. He called for help from the Liberty Grove Fire Chief, Chris Hecht. 10 volunteers came to the Island aboard Jeff Weborg’s fishing tug to assist and they also brought extra tanks of air. With the additional help and the use of the recently purchased aerial fire truck, the fire was contained to the east end. The truck enabled the fire fighters to dump 400 gal of water through the attic windows. The family’s living quarters suffered smoke damage but the Gibsons were at least able to save some family pictures, valuable records, etc. At this time, the Gibson’s plan to rebuild. Meanwhile they are staying in one of the cabins and trying to restore some order in the one room at the Inn that was least damaged. The fire appears to have started in the chimney from a woodstove in the parlor. * Pam Goodlet won 2nd prize in the Door County Advocate Christmas Cookie Contest.
